Time goes by quickly when you wake up early in the morning, go to work during the day and have fun until late at night. That is pretty much what my life has been like the past two and a half weeks, as a KPMG global intern in Milan. My typical day in Italy looks like this: I wake up early and have a simple breakfast accompanied by espresso, in order to start work at 9:00 a.m. At work, I am always busy doing various assignments that have exposed me to different aspects of an audit such as performing test work and bank reconciliations.
I also take the time to speak as much as possible with my teammates so I can ask questions about audit procedures, learn more about the Italian culture and improve my Italian. Working all day definitely takes a lot of energy. My team treats me just as any other first-year associate. I move around my client’s offices and buildings to obtain information about the firm, to walk through their different systems and internal controls, or to ask questions about things we don’t understand right away. In addition to my responsibilities with KPMG in Milan, I also have responsibilities to attend to for my internship. Days at work are definitely hectic, but thanks to all the things I do because of work I have had more fun and met more people than I could have ever expected.
I usually leave work between 6:00 and 6:30 p.m. KPMG not only wants its interns to have a global experience in the professional aspect, they also want us to explore the culture as much as possible and that’s why they give us free time after our regular work hours. Milan has so much to offer that my roommate and I find ourselves doing something different almost every night. I go to bed every night feeling extremely happy and excited for the next day to start.
I’ve gotten really used to this lifestyle, so I’m sad to say I have to leave in a week and a half. I’m getting to know my client and my team better, I’ve discovered a lot of places in the city that I love, and I truly feel at home in Milan. I have plans to go to a lake nearby on Saturday with my roommate and to the beach with one of my colleagues and her friends on Sunday. I also have a new assignment next week and my manager told me I’m going to meet the partner on the engagement. I’m sure next week will go by a lot faster than the last ones, so I’ll tell you all about it in my next post.
